Default Converting vhs tapes to dvd and editing video in Vista

I was using an AdsTech DVDXpressDX2 to convert our old family movies to DVD
and edit the video in Roxio with my old computer, Windows XP. I can't get
the beta Vista software from AdsTech to load because it says there is a
previous version of the software already on my computer. I have downloaded
a freeware registry cleaner and used it several times, as well as doing
advanced searches on all the key words connected with the AdsTech device and
deleting and uninstalling everything. Still get same error message from
Windows Installer that "Another version of this product is already
installed....."

Advice from AdsTech was to System Restore to a time before I had any AdsTech
on this new computer but have been trying to fix this problem for so long
that there are no restore points old enough to do that. That is the "final
word" from AdsTech support, they have no more suggestions.

Can anyone offer advice on getting the AdsTech software to load onto my
computer, or tell me if there is another device that I can buy to capture
the video from these vhs tapes and convert it to digital video for editing
on my computer.

Would really appreciate any responses.

Thanks,
Mike

Default Re: Converting vhs tapes to dvd and editing video in Vista

I installed the "cleanup" program but, when I ran that program it did not
list anything connected to AdsTech. I did uninstall the new beta program
for Vista before I ran the cleanup because I didn't want to get confused
with which one I might see in the "cleanup" program.

This is the error message I got when I tried to open the "corrupt" copy of
the beta software "Capwiz":

Error Type=CapWiz Critical Err
Install Dir=C:\Program Files\ADSTech DVD Xpress DX2
File=D:\Data\Instant DVD 3.0\cw300\Shared\Misc\CMpegFileProp.cpp
Line=708
Version=3. 8. 0. 15
Build=Apr 12 2007 @ 01:22:40

It looked to me like that D:\Data.... file might be what Windows Installer
was seeing as the "earlier version" already installed, but I can't find that
file on my computer anywhere.

Should I reinstall the beta software and then run the "cleanup utility"?

Thanks,
Mike

Default This worked for me

Hi, I hope this helps you. it is a solution I found on another forum that worked for me. here is a copy of that post ..............

This is a walkthrough of how i got my Ads-Tech DVD DX2 working with Vista.

Downloaded the following from DX2 Download page on the ADS-Tech site:

Capwiz Beta (testing) 3.8.0.15 (English)
Beta (unsupported) Driver for Vista

Extract both files to My documents or whatever folder you choose!!

1. Plug in your DVD DX2

2. Completely uninstall Capwiz and Ulead software from the computer.

3. Right Click on My Computer..Click on Properties..Click Device Manager..

4. In Device Manager, locate "Sound Video and Game controllers" and click the plus sign to expand the category..

5. Locate the listing for the DVD Xpress DX2 and right-click, selecting to uninstall the device. Select to delete the driver files as well..

6. Once uninstalled, disconnect the device from your USB.

7. Close Device Manager and then locate the file, remsvcs.reg in the folder that you extracted earlier. Double click on the file.

8. Confirm to make the changes and once they are complete, you should reboot the system.

9. Once Booted, Install Capwiz from the Extracted Files. I got a box coming up during installation saying that there was already capwiz software on my computer. It installs it anyway..

10. Plug the unit into the USB port. Better using the one that goes the the motherboard.

11. When prompted, select to install software for the device.

12. If prompted, do not allow the system to connect to the internet to find drivers. In some systems, this causes the drivers that were published for Windows XP to be installed. This should not occur and it will cause problems if it does.

13. Select to "Browse My Computer for Driver Software."

14. Click "Let Me Pick from a list of Device Drivers."

15. Click Have Disk and then Browse. navigate to the extracted files, The Beta Vista driver you downloaded from the site.

16. Click to open Vista_x64. Then Click ok. Then click next. Once the installation completes, restart your computer.

Now you should be able to open up Capwiz without it saying: Capwiz needs to update driver.

This method i wrote down here worked for me. I just finished recording several VHS tapes onto my computer..

good luck
